More Than A Cold Shoulder
Is shoulder pain getting in the way? A niggling shoulder is a common injury. The shoulder joint has several tendons, ligaments, and muscles covering the bone. Just one torn ligament can put a damper on the quality of life. In some cases, a doctor may even suggest bicep tenodesis surgery. On the bright side, not everyone will experience shoulder pain and tears. There are, however, 3 factors that increase the risk of a shoulder injury.

1) Sports strain the shoulder
Professional and recreational sports are excellent for health and wellness. At the same time, some games can aggravate the joint. Tennis players, baseball pitchers, swimmers, and gymnasts are all prone to shoulder pain.
2) Overworking the joint
Some jobs require repetitive use of the arms and shoulders. These jobs could cause shoulder pain and tears. Heavy machinery workers, assembly line
staff and construction workers are at risk for shoulder pain.
3) Age brings more than wisdom
Age is the most significant risk factor of all. Over time, shoulder tendons and ligaments become weaker. Wear and tear means there are higher chances for pain and tears. Even conditions like osteoarthritis can weaken the joint further.
Treating shoulder pain and tears
While rotator cuff tears are more common, bicep tendon tears can also cause pain and discomfort. Two tendons at the front of the shoulder connect the bicep. Torn bicep tendons are usually felt at the front of the shoulder. Most persons with shoulder pain or a tear can get help without surgery. Hot and cold therapy, pain medication, and physical therapy are all effective means of treatment. In severe cases, even a steroid injection can help.
Turning to bicep tenodesis surgery
In cases of an acute tear or failed treatment, the doctor will decide on bicep tenodesis surgery to treat pain and inflammation. In most cases, bicep tenodesis is a minimally invasive procedure done under general anesthesia. Using a small incision, a surgeon inserts a high-powered camera to view the tear. The surgeon then uses micro-tools to stitch the torn ligament together. Bicep tenodesis surgery is a simple outpatient procedure with a high success rate. Make sure to follow the surgeon’s instructions for a successful recovery.
Use surgery as a last resort
Some persons are at higher risk than others for shoulder pain and tears. The good news is that doctors treat most injuries by non-surgical means. Yet, there are some cases where non-surgical treatment fails. At this point, bicep tenodesis works best. Speak with a doctor for the next step to deal with shoulder pain.
